Story

The story starts with Jeffery Dahmer’s final attempt at murder. The scene begins with his next door neighbor hearing the sounds of his clean up routine, the sound of buzz saws and cracking bones, followed by a foul odor. He then goes to a gay bar and persuades a black man into going back his apartment with him for drinks and a movie. He brings the man to his apartment, walking by multiple papers about missing African Americans throughout the city, meaning they were most definitely caused by him. When they enter his room, the man immediately notices the red flags, the bad smell, the weird looking beverage, especially when he pulls a machete on him once he tries to run away. However, the guy is able to escape, surprising me because I would expect a serial killer to be a better fighter, then again Dahmer did try to sedate him so I guess he knew that himself. The man brings the cops to the apartment and they uncover all of the human remains he has hidden in his house. They found dozens of skulls under his bed, a human head in the fridge (American Psycho) and even human hearts, making it even more uncomfortable than I was before. He’s put into custody and his parents get a call from the police. After this it’s a flashback into his life while he’s being interrogated by police officers.

Reopening Wounds

The families of the victims of Jeffrey Dahmer sent backlash to the Netflix series, saying that it makes them “relive” the horrific events. Now, I understand their issue, but doesn’t that just mean it’s a good adaptation? When I was watching it, I was already uncomfortable and I have no relation to Dahmer at all. Now if one of my family members was a victim of him, I can understand why this would be seen as insensitive. It would make me angry too to see someone who was such a monster to my family be humanized in any way, it would be hard to accept anything like that. But then again, if there’s a show that hits that close to home, I would suggest just not watching it. That’s just my opinion though…

My Thoughts

This was genuinely one of the most unsettling things I’ve ever seen. When I first watched it, I got really conscious of my heartbeat, especially when Dahmer said he would eat one. Evan Peters plays Jeffery Dahmer perfectly. I’m usually used to seeing him in a comedic role like he was in the X Men movies and that one character he played in The Office. The way he plays Dahmer makes you feel uncomfortable, with the way he looks at people, how the tone in his voice is always the same, even his movements as Dahmer are creepy with his unmoving arms while walking, it gives him a sort of awkward undertone and makes him seem like an alien. The story shows you how his dysfunctional childhood caused him to become the psychopath he turned out to be, something I always like in psychopath movies, you get to see what led them to do what they did, not exactly forgiving them for what they did, but humanizing them.
